Frequently Asked Questions
Caring For Your Handmade Hats
How Do I Wash My Hat?
Caring for your hats purchased from this shop is easier than you might think. However keep in mind these are hats and all good hats do get worn out over time. All of the hats I make are made with a very high quality and super soft but durable acrylic yarn. Your hat can simply be thrown in the washer on gentle cycle and put in the dryer on low heat setting.
For even better care and to make sure your hat stays in tip top shape for the longest period of time I recommend gentle hand washing following these instructions: Fill a large bowl or your kitchen/bathroom sink with lukewarm water and add your favorite liquid laundry detergent (doesn’t take a lot). Then simply place your hat in the water and give it a gentle washing with your hands. Give it a good rinse under the tap and gently squeeze all of the excess water you can out of the hat and then place it on a towel. Now roll the hat in the towel with just enough pressure to remove any more excess water. Now place your hat on a dry towel and flatten it out and just leave it for a few hours to dry. All of this sounds like more work than it really is but this will keep your hats fresh and in shape longer.
About The In Stock Half Off Pricing Structure
What’s up with your new pricing system?
This is not a large chain store where tons of freight is moved in and out on an hourly basis. This is a small private home business with limited storage space. This shop is built on custom orders however in order to stay on top of the competition I have to make as many hats in as many color combination’s and styles that I can to show my customers what I can do and what I have to offer here…. and that means all those hats can pile up if I don’t get them moved out….. and I don’t like keeping too many hats in storage for too long. I make so many hats each week I had to come up with a pricing plan to help me move my hats out faster. A plan that would help me and offer my customers a chance to get some awesome headgear at a low price. On Monday, February 28th, 2011 a new pricing structure was implemented to help me move out first unit items faster at a 50% discount to the first lucky customer to buy. This is called In Stock First Buy. What this means is that each new hat I make and list in my shop for sale will always be half price on the first unit sold. After that the item becomes a custom made to order item that will go for full price. Moving the first unit out at a discount helps me keep my storage space empty and gives my customers a chance to get all of my newest items at a great price. It has been a great plan so far.
So what does that mean exactly?
Duh! That means if you like my shop and my hats and want to get some great deals then you need to visit my site frequently and get those deals before someone else does.
About My Mad Skills
How did you get to be so talented with your knit and crochet skills?
Ahhh thanks for noticing. I’ll try and make this short. I started out a a very young age. I was around 10 I think when I begged my mother to teach me how to crochet. It was something I remember being very much drawn to. I remember watching my mother working tediously with her yarn and crochet hook making stuff and thought it was really neat how she made stuff with her yarn. One day I couldn’t take it any more and asked her to teach me. She taught me the basic stitches and how to read crochet patterns. It didn’t take long for me to learn at all as I remember and it was something I could not force myself to put down. After awhile I taught myself how to knit around the age of 11 or 12….. or possibly a little older…. I don’t exactly remember how young I was at that point. I guess the main factor in my ability to do this so well is simply the time I’ve had in my life to practice. And it take a lot of patience as well.
Is knitting and crocheting the only crafting skills you have?
Hell no! I’m pretty good at cross stitching and I am developing basic skills at jewelry making with hopes to someday have my own jewelry line for men here at The Hat Pit.
Are there any crafty things you would like to do that you haven’t tried yet?
I have always wanted to learn how to make glass beads. Something about turning a wad of molten glass on a tendril in front of a torch and making something that can accent a wardrobe is very appealing to me. I also would like to become a good candle maker, develop my skills in drawing and painting. I’m also slightly interested in learning how to sew because I have a fondness for bags and I would love to put together a purse line for the ladies out there…. you heard me right….. unfortunately I have to go about all this one dream at a time and it’s looking like I’m gonna be doing the hat thing for a long long time. I’m not complaining.
About The Business
What do you enjoy the most about running your business?
Obviously if you can’t tell… the hat making itself. It’s an addiction only a fellow hat maker could understand.
What is your least enjoyable aspect of running your online hat shop?
Good question. I really don’t care for the photography work involved with keeping this shop going and the listing process is a little more tedious than I care for as well…. but I know those are just a couple of the many crucial things as with all of it that has to be done. So I grind my teeth and do the best I can. I have said this a thousand times over. I am a much better hat maker than I am a photographer, and all of that site maintenance…. well I get plenty of practice that’s for sure but if I could afford a site keeper I sure would hire one. Sometimes I think I would love it more if I could just concentrate on making the hats and have someone else do the photo work and site maintenance…. but that’s just the lazy guy in me talking. I wouldn’t trade any of the experience and happiness I’ve gotten in doing this all by myself.
